A senior House Democrat has at the end of the day issued a apocalyptic warning that environmental change will hit women harder than men, and that it could drive a huge number of poor ladies to engage in “transactional” in order to provide food and water for their families.
Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) proposed a resolution that said as the climate changes, it will cause food and water shortage around the globe according to World Politics Today.
That will make pressures on poor women specifically, since they are often charged with growing food and collecting water for their families.
As assets dwindle, it could drive a lot of women to deal sexual favors for food and water, the resolution stated. Barbara Lee stated.
Watch the video response to her comment below:
“[F]ood insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health,” it read.
The resolution concluded by saying Congress must recognize the “disparate impacts of climate change on women,” and must encourage the use of “gender-sensitive frameworks in developing policies to address climate change.”
Lee presented a comparative resolution in the last Congress, however it didn’t go anywhere.
Lee said in that her resolution is intended to remind policymakers that more women should be included discussions about how to react to the changing climate.
What do you think of Barbara Lee’s claim about global warming causing women to become prostitutes?
