More than 150 students walked out of Hillsboro High School over a dispute about the use of the girl’s locker room by a boy student that dressed like a girl.
Roughly 30-40 people showed support for the boy senior, that is nick-named Lila Perry, who wants to use the girls’ locker room during gym class. Perry was born a male but said he has identified as a female since 13.
Heck, If I knew it was that easy to get to go in the girls locker room as a young teen going through early childhood development then I might have tried it too just to get a peek. But seriously, the people that were actually born female should have the right to privacy more so than the guy pretending to be female should have a right to go around them naked.
“There’s a lot of ignorance, they are claiming that they’re uncomfortable. I don’t believe for a second that they are. I think this is pure and simple bigotry,” said Perry.
A short distance away, a counter protest was being held by people claiming they have relatives at the high school.
“Boys needs to have their own locker room. Girls need to have their own locker room and if somebody has mixed feelings where they are, they need to have their own also,” said protester Jeff Childs.
Perry told News 4 school officials have been accommodating, understanding, and compliant with Title IX. The school offered him a private gender-neutral restroom, which he turned down.
Obviously his true intentions are clear. I would love to have my own personal dressing room. but he declined the offer demanding he be allowed in the girls dressing room.
Students walked out for almost two hours. Some against what the transgender student has been doing, others supporting her. Lila Perry was sequestered in a school office during the walkout. She feels like what`s she`s doing is important.
“It wasn`t too long ago white people were saying I don`t feel comfortable sharing a bathroom with a black person and history repeats itself.” said Lila Perry.
The students used their right of free speech to express both displeasure and support of Lila Perry. He is a transgender student, who until recently, has been changing for P.E. class in the girls bathroom even though he is still physically male.
Jeff Childs, a parent of two school age children, drove from farming to have his voice heard on a Hillsboro street corner Fox2 reported.
“I feel these girls have a right to their own privacy. Without the privacy they have nothing.”
The issue attracted a huge turnout at last week`s school board meeting.
“I find it offensive because Lila has not went through any procedure to become female, putting on a dress and putting on a wig is not transgender to me.” said student Sophie Beel.
That’s right, the boy is still a “boy”. And will always be one. Even if we pretend that he isn’t, that doesn’t change the truth. Just because we pretend a cow is a horse doesn’t mean it won’t still “moo”.
“I think this is pure and simple bigotry I think they are using their claim they are uncomfortable, to target me a transgender woman.” said transgender student Lila Perry.
“(s)He is a human and (s)He has human rights as everyone else.” said student Hayley Reezes.
Reezes is correct when talking about rights, because everyone else in the school has rights too. What about the right to privacy for all of the females in the school?
Perry says she dropped P.E. because she didn’t feel comfortable with the other girls and she was concerned about her safety. However, Lila Perry says she gives the school administration a 9 on a 1-10 scale for making her feel safe, welcomed and loved.
