JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Larry Murphee wanted to show his patriotism, so the military veteran put a small United States flag in a flower pot on his front porch. Now that may cost him his home.
The homeowner’s association in his community fined him for displaying the flag, charging him $8,000 and putting a foreclosure lien on his house.
Under state and federal law, he is free to display the flag, WTEV reported, but when the news station reached out to the HOA’s attorney, she stated that if Murphee fails to pay the fine within 30 days, the law office can foreclose on his house.
Murphee said that he will keep fighting for the right to display his flag.
I want it to go away. It’s such a minor little thing and they keep coming after me.
Murphee’s hope is that someone can help him with his legal costs – he doesn’t want to move, but won’t compromise his love of country to do so.
