An Islamic leader has just confirmed that the Quran now gives men permission to beat disobedient wives. As long as they only use their fists.
The right to wife beating is found in chapter 4, verse 34. Additional references on wife beating are found in Muhammad’s traditions (hadith), and biographical material (sira).
Many people have criticized Islam because of this harsh sanction and many Muslims have written articles seeking to mollify or defend it.
The head of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Keysar Trad, made the comments about the Muslim teachings after being questioned by Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
Mr Bolt pressed Mr Trad about an interpretation of a passage in the Koran stating it is permissible for husbands to beat their wife with their hands.
Mr Trad responded that he has ‘studied the verse in depth’.
‘I’ve discussed it with many scholars and what this verse is saying is violence is a last resort.
‘Before you even consider using your hand, before you consider any act of violence, have you checked box number one, which is counselling?
Have you checked box number two?
In review of the actual teachings of the Quran, hadith, and sira, Islam is rightly criticized. This command is not only a harsh way to treat one’s wife, it portrays the degraded position of married women in Islam.
It will be shown from the Quran, Hadith, Sira, and other Islamic writings that this “Islamic” wife beating has nothing to do with a light “slap on the butt”, but rather it is extremely physical and painful.
While this is great news for all those guys that just love to come home in a drunken rage and decide to beat their wife just because dinner isn’t ready, it leaves me with the question, why would any woman want to marry a muslim man?
I know that some women were forced into the marriage at a very young age. Usually before they turn 10, but for the older ones, why?
