VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A man was out riding his bike at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront when out of nowhere a man got up and punched him in the head.

The victim says that he believes this was thugs playing the “knockout game,” a crime that seems to be sweeping the county.

“I’m lucky that I didn’t get seriously injured,” the man, who asked to remain unnamed, told WAVY10. “It was absolutely crazy. All I could do was put my hands up and cover my head the best I could.”

The man says he was riding his bike down the Virginia Beach boardwalk on Sunday morning and did not anticipate an attack nor could he have done anything to stop it.

“Out of nowhere, a guy jumps off the bench and clocks me in the back of the head,” he said. “I fell down, the bike went down, the bike was on top of me, and I got a guy above me just wailing on the back of my head.”

The victim says he saw the young African-American man sitting on a bench with a woman before he attacked him.

“All I saw was him jump up, sprint towards me,” he said. “I had no time to react.”

“I never heard of the knockout game ever, and since this incident, I’ve learned a lot about it,” the man said. “What compels somebody to want to erroneously jump somebody out of the blue with no provocation?”

The attacker did significant damage. The victim was treated at the hospital for a concussion and multiple scrapes from falling off of his bike.

“I got a huge bump right on the top of my head,” he said. “I have a huge knot in the back of my neck.”

He says that he hopes others at the beach stay alert so they don’t become a victim too.
