NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. —An 89-year-old wheelchair-bound New Smyrna Beach man was beaten during what police said was a home invasion robbery on Saturday night.
Police said Joseph Saulenas woke up to find a man and woman in his apartment in the 500 block of 10th Street about 10:30 p.m.
Police said Saulenas attempted to confront the pair and the man struck Saulenas in the face, possibly with a gun or some other heavy object.
“I think they thought he had a lot of money and I think it was someone he knew and trusted,” said neighbor Lee Upson.
The pair allegedly stole cash from Saulenas and fled. Police said it appears the robbers got into the apartment through an unlocked window.
Dorothy Irvin has lived at the apartment complex 20 years, and has seen lots of petty crime, but said nothing compares to the attack on Saulenas.
